"AVID has contributed to my success in middle school in the way that I have even a better chance to go to college because I started AVID in 8th grade. I get better grades and the teachers expect more of me, which I think makes me work harder." - Mayka Caro, 9th Grade - Mesa Verde Middle School

Our AVID program sponsored a "College Night" on March 12. Over 100 students brought parents to our program, "Making It Happen". We had representatives from many universities who spoke about Cal Grants and New Opportunities.
Our AVID team shared Cornell note taking with our staff. Many of our English/History teachers are using Cornell notes in their classrooms on a regular basis. They are seeing very positive results from the consistent use of Cornell notes by all students - increased focus, organization, and comprehension.

One of my seniors, Salina DeSalas, is in Washington DC this week to petition Congress for the continued funding of Upward Bound. Salina has been in the math/science Upward Bound Program at CLU for the past two summers. Joy Brittan, Upward Bound Program Director, selected Salina to accompany her to DC. When I told Ventura USD's Superintendent, Trudy Arriaga, about Salina, she asked Salina and I to come to the last school board meeting. She introduced us during the "Good News" section of the meeting.
Nicole Wong, Early Academic Outreach with UCSB, has held the combined 7th/8th grade AVID students spellbound during her Fall and recent presentation about classes to take in high school and why. Her presentation was more meaningful the second time they heard her! The same AVID class is receiving the Junior Achievement program. The presenter, Dan Sedana, Vandenberg AFB, works with the students in economics/job opportunities each Friday for eight sessions.
Judkins Middle School - Pismo Beach, CA - Barbara Babka, Coordinator
Beginning in January of 2002, my students read "The Mole People", an article in the New York Times, about homeless people who chose to live underground. My students had two guest speakers come to visit our classroom who worked at the EOC Homeless Shelter. Their visit inspired us to collect coffee and cereal for the homeless. One of my students went out to a grocery store and had coffee and cereal donated. Students then wrote an essay in which they had to decide, if they were homeless, would they want to live above or below the ground. Their essays were more powerful because they had a lot of prior knowledge acquired about the homeless.
