Honoring the Educators and Staff Who Make Our Schools Thrive

On Monday, October 20, school board trustees, administrators, teachers, and classified staff from across San Luis Obispo County came together to celebrate the remarkable individuals who make a daily difference in the lives of students. The 2025 SLO County School Employees of the Year awards ceremony honored outstanding employees from county school districts, publicly chartered schools, and Cuesta College. This year’s event was proudly sponsored by the Educational Employees Credit Union (EECU), whose continued support helps shine a spotlight on educational excellence across our region.

Countywide Honorees

Krys Chivens of Templeton Unified School District was recognized as the 2025 County Teacher of the Year, celebrated for her dedication, creativity, and powerful impact on student learning. Joining her in top honors, Cynthia Padgett of Lucia Mar Unified School District was named the 2025 County Classified Employee of the Year, acknowledging her exceptional service and unwavering support for students and staff.

SLOCOE Employee of the Year Recognitions

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education proudly celebrated two of its own exemplary employees:

  1. Melanie Powers, Site Supervisor for Early Learning Centers, was honored as SLOCOE’s Teacher of the Year for her leadership in early childhood education and her commitment to creating nurturing, high-quality learning environments for young learners.
  2. Matt Clark, Mental Health Therapist in Student Programs & Services, was named SLOCOE’s Classified Employee of the Year in recognition of his compassion, professionalism, and vital work supporting student well-being.

A Night of Appreciation and Inspiration

The evening was filled with heartfelt stories, warm applause, and deep appreciation for the educators and staff who dedicate themselves to helping students thrive. From early learning to career pathways, from classroom innovation to essential student support services, the honorees exemplify the passion and purpose that define public education in San Luis Obispo County.
