San Luis Coastal Unified School District (SLCUSD) has officially made history, becoming the first school district in the United States to achieve the prestigious Platinum Tier certification from Eat Real.
The landmark distinction marks a transformative milestone for school nutrition. Eat Real, a national non-profit dedicated to reforming K–12 food systems, audits school food services across 34 rigorous, science-backed performance indicators. To reach Platinum status, SLCUSD proved that its menus are not only exceptionally nutritious and responsibly sourced, but genuinely craveable for students—demonstrating that scratch-cooked, sustainable dining can successfully thrive at public school scale.
Raising the Bar on Student Health
Transforming cafeteria trays requires an overhaul of sourcing, culinary technique, and district-wide commitment. SLCUSD’s foodservice team has spearheaded that transition by swapping ultra-processed, heat-and-serve commodities for locally sourced produce, clean-label ingredients, and freshly prepared scratch meals.
This milestone builds directly on the culinary and operational dedication we highlighted in our previous feature on SLCUSD Food Services, which explored how their team has continuously reimagined student dining from the kitchen up. By meeting Eat Real’s most stringent standards across all 34 benchmarks, the nutrition team proved that uncompromising, planet-friendly quality belongs in public education. The Platinum certification reflects meaningful reductions in added sugars and artificial ingredients alongside a focus on regenerative agriculture, farm-to-school partnerships, and cultural menu diversity.

Real Food, Real Results: The Classroom Connection
The achievement comes alongside new evidence demonstrating that the impact of high-quality school food extends well beyond cafeteria walls.
SLCUSD was recently featured in a landmark, peer-reviewed study published in Public Health Nutrition. The research evaluated academic outcomes by comparing test scores from 49 Eat Real Certified schools—including San Luis Coastal—against nearly 2,500 non-certified schools nationwide.
The findings offer compelling data linking nutrition directly to learning:
- 5.51 percentage point increase in the proportion of students who met or exceeded standards in English Language Arts (ELA).
- Parallel upward trends documented across mathematics assessments.
At a moment when national assessment scores face headwinds and childhood diet-related illnesses remain a critical concern, the study provides hard empirical backing for a core district belief: what goes on a child’s lunch tray directly influences their cognitive potential in the classroom.
Inspiring a National Shift
For the nutrition staff, educators, and families of San Luis Coastal, the Platinum milestone validates years of relentless kitchen craftsmanship and community advocacy.
Investing in school food is an investment in student success. By setting a national benchmark for school food service, San Luis Coastal Unified has demonstrated that school meals can serve as an engine of equity, vitality, and academic excellence.
