April Activities for Month of the Child

Educational Support Services

In San Luis Obispo County, the entire month of April is dedicated to young children.  We support and celebrate April as, “Month of the Child” and “Child Abuse Prevention” month.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) first established the Week of the Young Child™ in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child™ focused on how as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation will better meet the needs of all young children and their families. Many states have now adopted a month-long celebration to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Locally, our early education community creates activities throughout the month that celebrate our youngest learners. Our City Councils, Cuesta College, and SLOCOE acknowledge Month of the Child and Child Abuse Prevention month by issuing proclamations, in partnership with local providers and the young children in those communities. Many cities such as SLO, Atascadero, Nipomo, and Oceano (to name a few) set aside a day during the month to promote the health and well-being of our children. Please take a moment to watch this humorous “Childcare Crisis” video on the importance of our childcare providers and the impact they have on our community.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the biggest event  “Children’s Day in the Plaza”, April 7th from 10:00am -3:00pm. The Mission in SLO will turn into a day filled with activities, community programs, music, dancing, exhibits, and food – all created for young children and their families.
